THE BOUNDLESS OPPORTUNITY

We should all be actuaries "
It is that there are no boundaries with respect to family back grounds, race or the state of the Attic to all individuals. This is what Actuarial Science means, the bringing together of the minds and coalescing them in the harmonious state to form one individual ‘The Mastermind’ as called by “Napoleon Hill.”
Actuarial Science involves the use of mathematical knowledge and statistics to counter the uncertainties in the financial firms, pension funds and insurance companies. It involves keen observation in the trend of currency depreciation/ appreciation, financial markets, economic growth and, out of the observations, deriving the most probable outcomes that are likely to occur in the future, together with a keen analysis of risks associated with those outcomes and provide alternatives in which risks are broadly controlled or annulled completely. For a keen actuary, all risks are like his or her workforces.
Then we know that Actuarial Science is about bringing the future in the present, and walking along the self-pre-ordained paths.

It is a boundless opportunity because one really needs not to hold a degree in actuarial science. Since it is all about coalescing minds, a group of, say four individuals with the knowledge of economics, statistics, mathematics and finance, independently, can come together and form one mind, ‘The Mastermind’ or an Actuary.
Extrapolating this to any field of endeavor, say, Agriculture, bringing the minds together, discussing and analyzing the risks, projecting the base lines, seeing what products are in demand or in short supply, the infrastructure, and the executing of the plan.
Imagine what impact this coming together will have in the country. Speaking of unemployment? We don’t wait for jobs to be available, we create jobs. Speaking of the growth of the economy? Speaking of improving infrastructures? Is it Educational system? Or is it increased production in the working areas?
We should all be actuaries, using that small that we have to create those big things that we have not.

It is the day we generate the network among those who have undergone some of the Actuarial professional or academic studies and are in the job industry with students currently pursuing Bachelor in Actuarial science. With the intention to develop students communication skills, social responsibilities and Awareness of Actuarial practices in real world apart from theories they learn from class.

A fantastic 2014-2015 Academic year networking day was held at Budya Island on late December 2014 filled out with Music and sport like volleyball, football and swimming , mathematicians looked energetic and enthusiastic with great joy and happiness.YES MATH IS NOT FUN ,but no doubt this was fun , while alumni share a word of aspiration with the first year students who were very enthusiastic and eager to learn more about the career.

THE BEST UPCOMING CAREER IN TANZANIA

It is fair to state that actuarial science is immature profession in Tanzan which is yet to be fully understood by majority including the key stakeholders  in the finance-related industries. Tanzanians have a general knowledge of the profession; however it is limited to the mathematics of insurance and social  security. This shallow application has led to limited opportunity to graduates and actuaries, who could have been an asset that shapes the economy towards   the better.

Owing to this challenge, Actuarial Sciences Students Association of the University of Dar es Salaam (ASSAUD) has been playing a constant role in promoting Actuarial Science to both stakeholders in finance related industries and young mathematicians. This article aims at shading light on the Actuarial Career day, an event created by ASSAUD for the aim of broadening mindfulness of actuarial profession in Tanzania.
The Actuarial Career Day, is an annual event created by ASSAUD in 2013 with the main goal of connecting the major stakeholders of the profession such as social security administrators, insurance companies, macro finance banks, investment companies, higher education institutes, stock exchange, government services and young mathematicians from secondary schools; for networking that will come up with a way of improving the profession in the country. The event is held in May each year and until now ASSAUD has succeeded to organize three actuarial career events, in May 2013, 2014 and 2015.
The event is conducted as a dialogue where by both actuarial science’s students and lecturers, companies’ representatives and actuarial alumni are given opportunity to present their experience about actuarial profession. It is an avoidable fact that this event is a big platform for both students and the general public to learn about actuarial profession and opportunities available in the market.
Despite of ASSAUD’s achievement in organizing this event there are various challenges that hinder its effectiveness such as shortage of funds to organize the event, small number of people who attend the event pre-eminently due to insufficient response from companies’ representatives and the general public. We believe that in future days we will be able to overcome these problems due to increasing peoples’ response and awareness about actuarial science in recent years.
ASSAUD believes, we have been able to reach this point because of the great support that companies, University of Dar es salaam and our members gave us, therefore we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the companies, institutions and general public for supporting and participating in actuarial career day since its commencement in 2013. We invites all stakeholders, as well as the general public, to come and learn more about this profession and its application in the country in the coming actuarial career day.

ACTUARIAL CAREER DAY 2015

Over a fifty actuarial sciences’ students, the key stakeholders in the finance-related industries. High school students amongst others attended the exclusive academic event in Tanzania called “Actuarial Career Day” the event was held on Saturday, May 17th, at the University of Dar es salaam, it’s an annual event that brought together the major stakeholders of the Actuarial profession such as social security administrators, insurance companies, macro finance banks, investment companies, for networking that will come up with a way of improving the profession in the country. In this event ASSAUD President Mr. Lanyuni Robert took the unprecedented step of inviting people from oil and gas industry to talk about actuarial profession in their area.

Speakers from Statoil, African life assurance and National Insurance Cooperation (NIC) inspired students to work hard and make their chosen careers more than just a job. They shared their experience in their respective fields, insisting that there are plenty of opportunities for actuaries in the market. Speaker from African life assurance advised students to undertake actuarial exams so that they became acceptable not only in the country but also internationally. They also point out insufficient knowledge about actuarial science by the general public as one of the challenge that led to limited opportunity to graduates and actuaries, who could have been an asset that shapes the economy towards the better.

“We will continue to ensure that graduates in actuarial science continues to be competent and fits the market needs of Tanzania” said Agnella Nemuo who represented actuarial alumni, she also pointed out various areas where currently graduates in actuarial science have been employed such as, insurance, pension, auditing.

The presentations strike a chord with Consolata Gabone from TIRA, who remarked, “I have mathematics wizards (actuaries) in my office who graduated here last year, I appreciate their knowledge and their working attitude, they are motivated to do more than just get the job done; I expect the same ability from you who are here today” a captivating response from the audience makes the day a special day to remember.
