It is fair to state that actuarial science
is immature profession in Tanzan which is yet to be fully understood by
majority including the key stakeholders in the finance-related industries.
Tanzanians have a general knowledge of the profession; however it is limited to
the mathematics of insurance and social security. This shallow application has
led to limited opportunity to graduates and actuaries, who could have been an
asset that shapes the economy towards the better.

Owing to this challenge, Actuarial Sciences Students Association of the University of
Dar es Salaam (ASSAUD) has been playing a constant role in promoting Actuarial
Science to both stakeholders in finance related industries and young
mathematicians. This article aims at shading light on
the Actuarial Career day, an event created by ASSAUD for the aim of broadening
mindfulness of actuarial profession in Tanzania.
The Actuarial Career Day, is an annual event created by ASSAUD in 2013 with the main goal of
connecting the major stakeholders of the profession such as social security
administrators, insurance companies, macro finance banks, investment companies,
higher education institutes, stock exchange, government services and young
mathematicians from secondary schools; for networking that will come up with a
way of improving the profession in the country. The event is held in May each
year and until now ASSAUD has succeeded to organize three actuarial career
events, in May 2013, 2014 and 2015.
The event is conducted as a dialogue where
by both actuarial science’s students and lecturers, companies’ representatives
and actuarial alumni are given opportunity to present their experience about
actuarial profession. It is an avoidable fact that this event is a big platform
for both students and the general public to learn about actuarial profession
and opportunities available in the market.
Despite of ASSAUD’s achievement in
organizing this event there are various challenges that hinder its
effectiveness such as shortage of funds to organize the event, small number of
people who attend the event pre-eminently due to insufficient response from
companies’ representatives and the general public. We believe that in future
days we will be able to overcome these problems due to increasing peoples’
response and awareness about actuarial science in recent years.
ASSAUD believes, we
have been able to reach this point because of the great support that companies,
University of Dar es salaam and our members gave us, therefore we extend our
heartfelt gratitude to all the companies, institutions and general public for
supporting and participating in actuarial career day since its commencement in
2013. We invites all stakeholders, as well as the
general public, to come and learn more about this profession and its
application in the country in the coming actuarial career day.
