Over
a fifty actuarial sciences’ students, the key stakeholders in the
finance-related industries. High school students amongst others attended the
exclusive academic event in Tanzania called “Actuarial Career Day” the event was held on Saturday, May 17th,
at the University of Dar es salaam, it’s an annual event that brought together
the major stakeholders of the Actuarial profession such as social security
administrators, insurance companies, macro finance banks, investment companies,
for networking that will come up with a way of improving the profession in the
country. In this event ASSAUD President Mr. Lanyuni Robert took the
unprecedented step of inviting people from oil and gas industry to talk about actuarial
profession in their area.
Speakers from Statoil, African
life assurance and National Insurance Cooperation (NIC) inspired students to
work hard and make their chosen careers more than just a job. They shared their
experience in their respective fields, insisting that there are plenty of
opportunities for actuaries in the market. Speaker from African life assurance advised
students to undertake actuarial exams so that they became acceptable not only
in the country but also internationally. They also point out insufficient
knowledge about actuarial science by the general public as one of the challenge
that led to limited opportunity to graduates and actuaries, who could have been
an asset that shapes the economy towards the better.
“We will continue to ensure that
graduates in actuarial science continues to be competent and fits the market
needs of Tanzania” said Agnella Nemuo who represented actuarial alumni, she
also pointed out various areas where currently graduates in actuarial science
have been employed such as, insurance, pension, auditing.
The presentations strike a chord with
Consolata Gabone from TIRA, who remarked, “I have mathematics wizards (actuaries)
in my office who graduated here last year, I appreciate their knowledge and
their working attitude, they are motivated to do more than just get the job
done; I expect the same ability from you who are here today” a captivating
response from the audience makes the day a special day to remember.
